As an aspiring writer your goal is to publish a book, and the hardest part is getting started and finding inspiration. In the previous post – How to Get Creative and Overcome Writers Block – Part 1, we offered a few tips that can help with overcoming writers block, and now we continue with a few more tips:
Watch and review one of your favorite TV shows. This tactic is one of the more unorthodox ones because some conventional (albeit incorrect) wisdom is that writers do not watch television, or they should stop if they do so. The reality is that a very large percentage of us have at least one TV show we are passionate about and that resonates with us, writers included.
If you are stuck with writer’s block, try playing an episode of your favorite show and writing a review on it at the same time. What do you like about it? What do you dislike about it? Why does the story speak to you? Even if you never publish the review, this exercise will get you writing about something meaningful to you.
Make a video presentation instead of writing. This option works when you have some very general starting point, such as a couple of keywords. If the thought of generating one more specific topic and writing one more article is making you draw blanks, try working the material into a video presentation instead. You do not even need a video camera to do this; basic screen-casting and video-editing software programs are widely available, many of which are free. The learning curve for making these presentations is also quite easy.
Subscribe and listen to podcasts. This tactic follows the same basic idea as writing TV show reviews. These audio presentations can provide valuable insight from knowledgeable people in the same fields. The quality and usefulness of podcasts can vary, but creators are publishing new ones on a frequent basis. The subject matter in high quality podcasts can contain a wealth of new ideas and information about your main niche, and you can use this material as a starting point for new writing topics.
Each of these strategies is intended to help you get out of your own headspace as a writer and take in more of the world immediately surrounding you. New ideas from other writers and content creators can be a valuable tool for overcoming writers block, and these tactics can also inspire you to write your own take on the same ideas.
